Green Juice Recipes for Beginners

How To Make Green Juice: Work Your Way Up!

When you’re just starting with green juice, start slow. Juice recipes made only out of vegetables isn’t the best way to start with green juices.

In the beginning, simply add more fruits to your juices. Fruits are like a spoonful of sugar that makes every green juice taste good.

I know many people fear that adding fruits can cause blood sugar to rise. While that’s probably true, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

The most important thing is that you enjoy your green juices right from the start. It’s more likely you will continue juicing if you actually enjoy the taste.

It’s good to start with a 50/50 ratio. That means juices are made of 50% vegetables and 50% fruits. Over time, your taste buds will get used to drinking greens. Then you can slowly add more vegetables and reduce the fruits.

A Few Words on Juicers

When you’re making green juice, it’s best to use a slow juicer. Slow juicers (also called masticating juicers, or cold press juicers) are the best juicers for leafy greens

If your juicer sounds like a jet plane taking off right in your kitchen, then you probably have a centrifugal juicer. These juicers have fast-spinning cutting discs and slice the produce. Slow juicers slowly grind ingredients.

Leafy greens, like spinach and kale, are lightweight. Centrifugal juicers barely juice the leaves before shooting them into the pulp container. Now, before you throw your centrifugal juicer away, here are a few tips to get more juice out of greens even with a centrifugal juicer:

  • The Sandwich Method – don’t just put the greens into your centrifugal juicer, sandwich them between fruits. First, put half an apple in your juicer. Don’t start your juicer yet. Put some leafy greens on top, and put the other half apple above it. If your centrifugal juicer has a low-speed setting, use it. Start your juicer and slowly juice them.
  • Roll the Leafy Greens – if you don’t have any hard fruits in your juice recipe, simply roll your leafy greens before adding them to your juicer. This works great with kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, etc. Try to push down the greens as slowly as possible once you turned on your juicer.

If you’re just starting out with green juices, any juicer will work fine. The most important thing is to keep juicing! Once you’re convinced green juices should be a part of your life, consider getting a slow juicer. You’ll get a much higher juice yield from leafy greens. It can save you quite some money in the long run.
